Reviews:

Robert “Punchy” Powell, Author, Editor, Historian, Pilot,
352nd Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, WWII…

“Personal diaries almost always make you wonder what the author has failed to include in his efforts to record his daily trials and tribulations, but Josh Batchelder’s book Black Watch Diary is an interesting and enlightening account of his life and his military career flying as a Radar Observer (RO) in the F-94 Starfire and the F-89 Scorpions guarding the Canadian approaches to the U.S. and enduring the frigid reaches of Newfoundland and Labrador flying out of Goose Bay Air Base. His almost daily entries picture a young man, newly married but separated from his bride for long periods, a young man who filled those lonely hours with a burning passion to read and develop his understanding of the world and its people while exposed to the constant rigors and dangers of flying interceptor missions in weather that took the lives of several of his fellow flyers. This book is a quick take on the life and character-building experiences of a man who proudly served his country as a member of the 59th Fighter Interceptor Squadron whose motto was, ‘When the Ducks Walk, We Fly!’ It is full of the fun and frolic characteristic of those in service and even more so in fighter pilot groups. Black Watch Diary is quite an enjoyable read.”

Gregg O’Neil, Private Pilot, Instrument Rated, 28 Years of Flying, Aircraft owner, Business owner, Dunwoody, Georgia…
“Black Watch Diary should be especially appealing to all aviators who have experienced the hazards of adverse weather conditions, and to those who want to know what it was like flying the early jet fighters. History buffs will appreciate the book and the photographs of life in the Air Force in the 1950’s as well as those of the planes of the day.”

Mike Goodman, Owner Intown Bicycles, Atlanta, Georgia…
“Colonel Batchelder’s book is an insight into the history of that time. It gives one an inside look at both the dangerous and mundane life of young, raucous flyers that ‘stood the wall’ for us during the cold war. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.”

Stefanie Sage, an avid reader, Peoria, Illinois…
“An intriguing insight into the world of a ‘fly-boy’. The individual isolation coupled with unique camaraderie gave me cause to reflect upon the immense personal sacrifices that our military men made and continue to make for the freedom we so often take for granted. The account made me smile and shudder; all while pondering the world as it once was while contrasting it to the world we now live in.”

Nancy Sephton, Author of suspense stories, Berkeley, California…
“Black Watch Diary is an account that will warm your heart and send chills up your spine. You’ll be eager for the sequel of what followed in the lives of these spirited and brave young flyboys.”
